Fact is, where their first CD Moneymakerme (2004) almost exclusively dealt with life as seen through the alcoholically tainted specs of boisterous frontman Leon Caren, now it is time for a little contemplation and - letâs say - distance. Conspicuously labeled as alternative rockâ (the way the indication of the genre was originally meant), BLUES BROTHER CASTRO is as indie as indie could ever be. If rock was intended to be the anti culture, then this lot comes closest. Fun sounds like the definition of recalcitrance, but even in this there are various grades. Fun is different, and not only lyrically. The intensity that the word blues in the band name refers to is comparable only to that of the legendary Gun Club or Jon Spencer, and has remained fully intact. The music itself is also strikingly less one-dimensional than before. Fun is definitely multi-layered. That layering is due in large part to the bands recent touring schedule. In the wake of their 2005 appearances at Popkomm and New Yorks CMJ Music Marathon, BLUES BROTHER CASTRO toured the US for a month. Then, when the band was invited to play the prestigious SXSW Showcase in Austin, TX, they saddled up and did another three weeks in the States in early Spring. The release of FUN was followed by extensive touring in Holland, Spain and the UK as well as an appearance at CMJ in the fall of 2006. Thuis, in de multi-culturele havenstad Rotterdam, lijken de geluidsfragmenten van de straat, vanuit open ramen en opgepimpte auto“s, rechtstreeks zijn laptop in te stromen. De rafels rai, gabber, bling-bling raps, drumnbass, banghra, grime en veelsoortige traditionele invloeden verlaten vervolgens zijn laptop niet, voordat ze zijn versneden, gehakt en samengesmolten, om uiteindelijk door hem te worden gemixd in audiotracks, die kenmerkend zijn voor Malorix stijl: jumpy, freaky, groovy, vervreemdend en verfrissend. Zij bestaan uit Mr. Point (gitaar+ zang), Mr. Drain (drums) en Mr. Low (bas + gitaar). Sinds 1998 spelen zij als duo. Vanaf april 2005, Mr. Low voegde zich bij hen om bij te dragen aan hun geluidsmuur. Inspiratie vinden ze bij de In The Red en SST records sound alswel ook bands als Minutemen, Oblivians en The Gories. De bandnaam komt van de smerige en vervuilende petrochemische industrie waar Low Point Drains are used to throw out the dirt. Low Point Drains blaast je van je sokken met hun vuige trashgarage sound... Hun korte en gejaagde fastnrockin songs grijpen je bij de strot en beuken je kop tegen de vloer. Compromisloze trash/garage rock mayhem met een subtiele blues vibe! Live optredens zijn energiek en furieus, waarbij alles mogelijk is! Zij waren een van de eerste serieuze producers binnen het genre in Nederland. Tegen de tijd dat echte junglisten zich begonnen te verzetten tegen het nieuwe commerciele alternatief DrumnBass, had Deformer al enkele revolutionaire tracks geproduceerd. Na het verschijnen op enkele compilaties brak Deformer door met het uitbrengen van hun full length debuut Fxecutionersâ. Hiermee slaagde Deformer erin om de traditionele rauwe jungle sound te mengen met donkere Drum n Bass en brachten hiermee een groot publiek tot waanzin. De track The Possessor groeide uit tot een klassieker. Als snel tourde Deformer rond veel plaatsen in de wereld en brachten een aantal maxis uit inclusief Illy Noiz op Wax vol. 2. Een hardcore Jungle crossover statement was gemaakt toen Slasher uit kwam. De Slasher 12 (2001) is een klassieker onder de experimentele Jungle/ Drum n bass heads en was zijn tijd ver vooruit. Hij wilde niet verdwijnen van de platenperserijen vanwege de onorthodoxe sound en drum programming, en in sommige landen werd de plaat verkocht zonder de shockerende hoes. Deze plaat leidde tot een samenwerking met Slipknots DJ Starscream. De hoofdtrack Slasher wordt inmiddels gezien als een revolutionair werk en met zijn steady ritmes en typische Rotterdam hardcore sounds, wordt het nu geschaard onder de breakcore. Na het produceren van meer maxis, besloot Deformer om een tweede full-length album uit te brengen: Revolution Theory (23 tracks!). Dit tweede Deformer komt bovenop allle ontvangen enthousiaste reacties op hun debuutalbum, Fxecutionersâ. Het album verteld het verhaal van terugkeren tot de kern en herbergt een bonus skit voorafgaand aan track 1 op de CD wanneer je die terugdraait. Om het laatste album te promoten, bracht Deformer een limited collectors 12 van slechts 500 exemplaren wereldwijd uit. De waanzinnige albumhoes werd ontworpen door Redman Designs en is een waar kunststuk. Deze 12 trapt af met een zeer originele en beukende Jungle/ Metal crossover: Meatcleaver en introduceerde het publiek tot de Deformer mosh-pit bij live shows. Gedurende hun eerste publieke optredens in de onderste regionen van de lokale muziekscene en kunstenaarskringen, ontwikkelden zij zich vanaf hun eerste CD naar een meer dance georienteerd repertoire. Stöma gigs are always intense and vibrant, balancing on the edge of improvisation. Drummer Wouter van Wijk, bassplayer/vocalist Bruno Xavier Ferro da Silva and turntablist eNi-LesS are well known musicians in the alternative scene here in Rotterdam. Bruno and Wouter played in Doodoos Coffee (DDC) which is quite a big name over here. DDC is back in full action again after a break up which lasted three years. During that time Stöma was formed. Bruno liked to refer to Stöma as the colostomy bag Wouter and Bruno needed to get all the shit out they bottled up after DooDoo’s Coffee split up. Aside from DDC they both play in The Must which is the back up band for famous keyboard wizard Harry Merry. Furthermore Bruno plays in various projects like Bruno&Robin (with Belgian drummer Robin Schaeverbeeke), Dr. Schnitt, Grillig (hiphop) and WeGo (Danish dance/performance group). Wouter also plays in Clayborn; a rockband from Rotterdam. Beside his solo career, eNi-LeSs founded a production team Redrum Squad , Redrum Recordz an independent recordlabel, featured at many performances of well known groups and innovates in organising a large festival. Eerst kreeg hij het gitaarspelen onder de knie en deed veel ervaring op met muziekschrijven en het uitvoeren van zijn eigen composities. Zijn technisch-muzikale vaardigheden kregen als snel practisch vorm in de studio, waar hij niet alleen traditionele instrumenten bespeelde, maar ook zijn aandacht richtte op midi-programming en turntablism. Zijn experimentele composities spreken voor zich en Eni-Less wordt een bekende beatcreator en turntablist. Tijdens optredens in Nederland, wordt Eni-Less erkend door media en bookers vanuit verschillende muziek scenes, omdat het samensmelten van verschillende genres is waar hij in uitblinkt. Naast zijn solo carriere richt Eni-Less een productie team op genaamd Redrum Squad, het onafhankelijke platenlabel Redrum Recordz, verschijnt hij bij velerlei optredens van bekende groepen en organiseerd festivals. Het National Phonographic Festival focust op alle aspecten van de draaitafel, met veel performances van bekende internationale producers en turntablists, dj workshops en lezingen wordt een groot succes. Dit festival brengt een groot publiek voor het eerst in aanraking met draaitafels als een echt muziekinstrument. Hun idee is simpel: mix de urgentie en energie van klassieke punkrock met hedendaagse techno en gabber. Nummers worden geschreven op twee drummachines, een verscheurde gitaar en een oude computer resulterend in een hoog spannings mix van punk riffs, publieksbezwerende techno beats en popinvloeden. Indachtig de geest van alcoholische dance parties en de vuiligheid van een punk show, weet Aux Raus hoe zij een feestje kunnen maken van een begrafenis. Hij wordt vaak omschreven als de Nachtburgemeester van Rotterdam. Jules Deelder is ongetwijfeld een van Nederlands meest bekende dichters. Hij dankt een groot deel van zijn faam aan zijn publieke optredens, waarin hij een dandy-achtige pose combineerd met een curieuze mix van populaire stads humor en ironie, opgedist in onversneden plat Rotterdams. Hij kan met recht de aartsvader van de Nederlandse performance dichters worden genoemd. Er is een onmiskenbare link tussen Deelders poezie en de Nederlandse ultra-realisten uit de jaren 50s, alsook een groot raakvlak met het losse anarchisme uit de jaren 60s. Veel van zijn gedichten dreigen op uitdagende wijze in conflict te raken met zijn goede smaak. Feitelijk heeft Deelder zijn recept gevonden om succesvol een uitdrukkingsloze blik te combineren met een grof soort realisme en het komische effect van ironie. Hij noemt zichzelf een neon realist, een neon romanticus en een neon komiek. Deelders werk grenst vaak aan cabaret, maar was cabaret niet de moederschoot van een beweging als het Dadaisme? Met de Dadaisten deelt hij de liefde voor het absurde, geboren uit een meedogenloze uitdaging van de gevestigde hoge kunst. Zo heeft van zichzelf het enfant terrible van de Nederlandse dichters scene gemaakt, maar wel een die onmogelijk kan worden genegeerd. The filmmaker portrays a lost way of life which she was deeply influenced by. It is a tribute as well as a goodbye which puts things into perspective. Concerning us as much as the two humble characters. Anna Lange (1969) works as a multimedia and interdisciplinary artist. Lange studied at the Academy for Visual Arts in â��s-Hertogenbosch and at the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam. â��Shooting short silent movies doesnâ��t mean to me that I make a nostalgic move, or even worse a regressive one. The camera usually looks through the windscreen of a moving car and shows the locations from a manâ��s perspective. The soundtrack is made up of statements culled from interviews which provide insight into the world from the point of view of the prostitutes. Ben van Lieshout (1951) studied at the Free Academy in The Hague and works as a teacher at the Utrecht School of Arts. He makes experimental short films and feature films. The cold winter turns to a summer filled with scent and memories; memories of a bicycle crash, a tree blown down and a crawl through the surrounding undergrowth. Inside the house everything is quiet and familiar - until someone starts screaming in terror. Esther Rots (1972) studied at the School of Arts in Arnhem. Both her films Play with Me and I Sprout were selected for the short film competition of the Cannes Film Festival. The audience asks itself: Why? Eveline Ketterings (1965) works as theatre- and filmmaker, performer and opera singer. Her first â��officialâ�� film work is done in 1998. A song/performance/object that crosses boundaries. Bea de Visser (1957) made several of sound works, video installations and short films. She also worked with photography, painting, electro-acoustic music and digital media. Martha Colburn: Cosmetic Emergency Netherlands | 2005 | 9 min. | 35mm | 1:1.66 | colour | stereo | English COSMETIC EMERGENCY explores the idea of beauty through a collage of lyrical animations and live action. A film essay on the current trend of cosmetic obsession and the immortal quality of painting, the film searches for “what’s on the inside”. Topical news stories (such as the US military offering free cosmetic surgery) and musical film sequences are created with paint-on-glass animation, found footage and documentary techniques. The music commissioned for the film was created by New Zealand’s Hip-Hop artist, Coco Solid and Half Japanese founder Jad Fair, british radio artist Mick Hobbs and trombonist Hilary Jeffery. Also included is a rare appearance by the Dutch Ambassador of Cosmetic Surgery, Marijke Helwegen. Martha Colburn (Baltimore, 1971) started out scratching and re-editing found footage 16mm educational films. She studied at the Institute College of Art in Baltimore and from 2000, she attended the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Colburn has worked since 1995 on Super8. The European landscape is captured in a series of film sequences. The kernel of the project is a set of sharply defined rules: the position of the camera and the arrangement of the shots are determined by geodesic and mathematical principles. Sietske Tjallingii: The General Netherlands | 2004 | 3 min. | 35mm | colour | no dialogue A column of tanks drives through sand, until a wheel made of soldiers’ boots tramples down the tanks. Filmmaker Sietske Tjallingii used the boot wheel, better known as Eric Staller‘s bootank, to denounce and satirically comment on the patriotism and military display of power by post-911 America, referring to Charlie Chaplin‘s The Great Dictator. Tjallingii does so in three minutes. Sietske Tjallingii (1973) graduated from the Rietveld Academy of Arts in Amsterdam in 1997. Since then, she directs and produces her own films with her production company Take T Productions. Her films are characterised by a sense of irony and comment on the contemporary society. Tjallingii was awarded several times and her films are screened worldwide. Her short (animation) films are often inspired by b-films. Joost van Veen, Matt Hulse: Harrachov Netherlands | 2006 | 10 min. | 35mm | 1:1.85 | black & white | Dolby SR | no dialogue Combining live action, stop-frame animation and a kinetic sculpture, HARRACHOV explores the effect of an arcane force that, like a black hole or an immensely powerful electromagnet, exerts a far-reaching and irresistible power upon certain objects and materials, wilfully seducing, centralizing and internalizing them. Matt Hulse (1968, England) studied visual arts in Dundee and makes animations, documentaries, installations and audio art.  Enlarged from super8 to 35mm, the film is very grainy, in itself an homage to the medium of film which is also emphasised by the depiction of all kinds of turning machines, both in image and sound. Barbara Meter attended the Dutch Film Academy in 1963. Meter was co-founder of Electric Cinema, in the early 70s a bastion of Dutch experimental cinema. Meter has made many experimental short films, feature films and documentaries. She also works as a curator of film programs, teacher and free-lance lecturer on film. Bas Jan Ader (1942-1975) was a performance artist, filmmaker and photographer who lived in Los Angeles for most of his career. His work was obsessed with sadness, searching, loss and falling. For example, one of his more well-known works is a film called I too sad to tell you (1971) in which he simply cries in front of the camera. This sense of sadness and loss is maybe best portrayed by one of his writings:The sea, the land, the artist has with great sadness known they too will be no more. Apart from the video clip as the most obvious format the artists also delt with sound, music and pop culture in various other ways. Where in mainstream music video the song dominates the images some of the artists in this program treat image and sound as equals in order to achieve real synergy. Vrijwel direct begon hij met het fotogaferen van concerten en wat later ook met fotosessies voor muzikanten. Hij is het bekendst geworden met zijn korrelige zwart-wit liveregistraties, die hem geliefd hebben gemaakt bij Nederlandse en vooral Rotterdamse muzikanten. Naast fotograferen ontwerpt hij ook voor diverse muzikanten. Hij maakt cd-hoezen, websites en t-shirts. Departing from his own fear of the actual physical decay, illness and death, he tries to enter a subconscious level to reach the more profound fearscapes and their counterforces of nihilism that silently remove everything that is on the inside. Rene Castelijn (1965) is a photographic autodidact. Departing from his earlier studies in Philosophy he began working as a professional Photographer in Rotterdam in the year 2000. www.renecastelijn.nl     Bruno Ferro Xavier da Silva Bruno Ferro Xavier da Silva graduated from the Royal art academy in Rotterdam. Plays with a lot of different bands (at Dutch Punch in Stöma), the part of the art collective: Antistrot. Antistrot Antistrot a visual arts collective, have been working together since 1997 members Paul Börchers, Johan Kleinjan, David Elshout, Silas Schletterer, Bruno Ferro Xavier da Silva, Charlie Dronkers (video) and Michiel Walraven, started the group as a reaction against the establishment academy and gallery walls. The collaborative is tight, when working together, individuals come second to the collective and the final product is less important than the dynamic process of action and reaction through which Antistrot`s paintings and drawings come about. To Antistrot`s members these sessions form a visual sounding board for reflection on our constantly changing world. Their eclectic, chaotic and seemingly incoherent works mirror the avalanche of images, impressions and temptation to which we are daily exposed. In so doing, the members of Antistrot do not make value judgements. Not only do they react to consumer society, they are also - wholeheartedly - part of it. He had been doing comics since age 7. He is currently an editor for the Rotterdam-based magazine Zone 5300 (where he resides these days), writing comics criticism for Dagblad De Limburger (a Dutch newspaper), doing illustrations, translations and everything that comes with that. His most recent books are Troglodytes #1, 2 and 3 published by Oog & Blik (Amsterdam) Troglodytes at Top Shelf Comix (Portland, US) and Sine Qua Non at Les Editions de lAn 2 (Angouleme, France), in cooperation with Oog & Blik. He did illustrations for a variety of clients, including Skepter, De Humanist, Webber, Sesamstraat Maandblad, Jumbo, Kennisnet to name a few mainstream ones, had exhibitions in Galerie Lambiek in Amsterdam, the Bonnefanten Museum in Maastricht, Una Volta in Bastia (France), Centro Leon Cavallo in Milano (Italy), No Name Gallery in Minneapolis (US) and a list of other places. In 1992, he was rewarded with the Best New Talent price at the Haarlemse Stripdagen.
