| DEFORMER |
Deformer hails from Rotterdam city and stood up during the 92/93 Breakbeat/ Jungle era. They were one of the first serious producers in its genre in The Netherlands.
In the time that real Junglists revolted against the new commercial alternative Drum n Bass, DEFORMER already produced some revolutionary tracks. Some of them got stolen by crooked record companies, which gathered demos of relatively unknown artists.
The second DEFORMER album - Revolution Theory - tops all enthusiasm received by their debut, Fxecutioners on all fronts. Revolution Theory became a very versatile full-length album within its genre.
From danceable Jungle tracks to heavy experimental Drum n breaks and deep trip hop tunes, a large audience embraces this album already and the press loves it.
The DEFORMER sound is very recognizable by its raw, jungle orientated drum programming supported by dark scores creating a unique identity. Up till now, DEFORMER has never had a single bad review by the critics and if they will in the future, they probably wont have understood it...

| ST0MA |
Stöma is on a quest for new sounds and emotions. Stöma gigs are always intense and vibrant, balancing on the edge of improvisation.
Drummer Wouter van Wijk, bassplayer/vocalist Bruno Xavier Ferro da Silva and turntablist eNi-LesS are well known musicians in the alternative scene here in Rotterdam. Bruno and Wouter played in Doodoos Coffee (DDC) which is quite a big name over here. DDC is back in full action again after a break up which lasted three years. During that time Stöma was formed.
Bruno liked to refer to Stöma as the colostomy bag Wouter and Bruno needed to get all the shit out they bottled up after DooDoo’s Coffee split up.
Aside from DDC they both play in The Must which is the back up band for famous keyboard wizard Harry Merry. Furthermore Bruno plays in various projects like Bruno&Robin (with Belgian drummer Robin Schaeverbeeke), Dr. Schnitt, Grillig (hiphop) and WeGo (Danish dance/performance group).
Wouter also plays in Clayborn; a rockband from Rotterdam.
Beside his solo career, eNi-LeSs founded a production team Redrum Squad , Redrum Recordz an independent recordlabel, featured at many performances of well known groups and innovates in organising a large festival.
During his busy schedule, eNi-LeSs releases several cd’s and vinyls, produces for a lot for international artists, does a lot of t.v. appearances and now performs woldwide.
Their music is intense, psychedelic, dynamic and with diverse influences such as:
Stravinsky, Stooges, Public Enemy, DJ Disk, Autechre, Minutemen, John Coltrane, Butthole surfers, Steve Reich, Hendrix, Ruins, Nels Cline, Captain Beefhart, Sonic Youth, Primus, Beastie Boys, Jane’s Addiction, Eric Dolphy, RHCP, John Zorn, King Crimson, Squarepusher, Arab on Radar, Mark Dresser, Gregg Bendian, Cheech Wizard, Harry Merry, Mya Masaoka, Tool.....etc.....

| THE MOI NON PLUS |
The Moi Non Plus is one of the most energetic bands from Holland. The band plays an experimental kind of noise, like Sonic Youth or the uptempo sounds of Liars. Full of breaks, melodic choruses, howlin guitar riffs and pounding drum parts. The Moi Non Plus is a duo from Amsterdam. Both of the members are active in Subbacultcha!, a great indie platform that organises gigs in and around Amsterdam, where great indie bands play in cool venues. The Moi Non Plus performed at SxSW, CMJ and Popkomm last year.

| RAASKALBOMFUKKERZ |
The Formulator: poetik insanity & vokal noize
Dr. Snoodaard: producing, sampling, keyboards, drumpads, backing vocals, digital noize
The RaaskalBOMfukkerZ (gibberish bomb-fuckers) is a two-person battalion, which operates from the squatted freeports of the Netherlands, mainly Amsterdam. In 2003 they started operating their guerrilla battle for both more artistic & political balls as shear insanity in Dutch hip hop and far beyond. This resulted in notorious costumed live-shows, where experimental beats caused by uninsured illegal operations of Dr. Snoodaard are combined with unhygienic sample gear and boards. Upon this the Formulator (f.k.a. the Silent Partner) erupts combinations of (un-) conscious lyrix, stomachetwisting (sound-) poetic eruptions and unrecognizable human beat boxing-sessions. A bewildering hit at countless festivals, clubs and squats. They believe intellectual property is theft and every soul is free to upload, download or remix their stuff.
During Dutch Punch festival the RaaskalBOMfukkerZ will again prove themselves as a transnational and refreshing antidote in an age of semi-rational semi-democratic top40 cynicism. Let insanity and imagination reign supreme and most of all: let there be gibberish. Beyond any border.

| Filmbank : Dutch Experimental Short Films |
A program of recent experimental short films, selected by Kultprom from the Filmbank archives (distributor of experimental films). The Filmbank’s aim is to find an audience for independent, experimental Dutch films. Experimental in the widest sense of the word, encapsulating work that is inspired by the classic avant-garde or work that explores the relationship between film and other art forms. Any form that are suitable for projection are eligible. Format and length are unimportant. Quality is. The Filmbank will showcase films that are unique in their unconventional subject matter, working method and form. Films that are so confusing, beautiful, harsh or absurd that they are difficult to forget.
Oh Great Now Look What Happened
Tijmen Hauer, Gerbrand Burger | 2007 | 4 min. 4 sec | 35mm
Oh Great Now Look What Happened is a fascinating and puzzling impression of a strange and unexpected event. An indefinable feeling of fear and threat is portrayed in a short film that is both melancholy and funny.

A murder is taking place during a small party. The story is narrated with the help of subtlety shifting frames, creating confusion.

Each of the parts has its own specific colour spectrum and rhythm that combine with the especially composed music by the sound artist Pierre Bastian and the voice artist Andrea Emonds.
MTV Makes Me Want To Smoke Crack Too
Tijmen Hauer | 2004 | 1 min. 40 sec | minidv
The video consists of sixteen videoclips (and the songs they belong to) layered on top of each other. Mtv makes me want to smoke crack too was made in an attempt to settle the score with the endless amount of repetetive commercial imagery with which we are confronted on a daily basis and came to be a hypnotizing visual experience.

A video, consisting of overlayed 13 children drawings, creates an effect of an aggressive inferno of image and sound.

| Masters of experimental film: Frans Zwartjes and Paul de Nooijer |
Frans Zwartjes
Frans Zwartjes (1927) is filmmaker, musician, violinmaker, drawer, painter and sculptor. He has been heavily involved in film since 1968, both as a filmmaker and as a teacher at the ‘Vrije Academie’ in The Hague and at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam.
In his films, actors are adorned with make-up and costumes and are put in a setting to enact a staged event. Sexuality, psychosis, cruelty, power and powerlessness are ever recurring themes in his films. The images are abstracted in ruthless black and white. The general idea of reality is broken down by brilliant camera work and neurotic editing to replace it with a personal and often disturbing reality.
About Paul de Nooijer
Paul de Nooijer (1943) makes photographs, performances, installations and short animation films, in which he often uses the pixellation-technique. He uses his performances and films them to provide to the audience an amusing vision of his fascination for film, considered as an authentic form of art. Its eagerness by manipulating the visible world, by removing the reality of its daily context and to show it since another perspective, is the conductive thread of all his photographs, short free, video clips, and live performances.
Paul de Nooijer attended the Free Academy in The Hague as a student of Frans Zwartjes, and studied industrial design in Eindhoven.
Notes From The Underground (fragment 5’)
Anna Abrahams, Jan Frederik Groot | 1998 | 30 min. | 16mm | Dutch | subtitles: English
Group portrait of five Dutch independent filmmakers who make wayward, important films. The film consists of a relay race between five studios: Cyrus Frisch, Karel Doing, Frans Zwartjes, Victor Nieuwenhuijs and Maartje Seyferth take turns with the bolex camera. Fragment: filmmaker Karel Doing visits Frans Zwartjes.
Transformation by holding time (landscape)
Paul de Nooijer | 1976 | 4 min. | 16mm | colour | mono magnetic | no dialogue
Film camera registers the filmmaker looking back with a Polaroid camera.
Moving Stills
Paul de Nooijer, Frans Zwartjes | 1972 | 7 min. | 16mm | colour | mono optical | no dialogue
First film by Paul de Nooijer, made in corporation with Frans Zwartjes. Moving Stills shows several pictures of Francoise de Nooijer, which are binded together into a moving film via editing and colour effects. The erotic image receives an explosive set of meanings.
Sorbet III
Frans Zwartjes | 1968 | 6 min. | 16mm | black & white | mono optical | no dialogue
One of the first films by Zwartjes, influenced by the filmmakers of the New American Cinema he admired. Everything centers around the glances between a neurotic camera and the just as neurotic transvestite who reaches for a sorbet and looks in unease to what lying next to him on the couch.
How to make a New York cake
Paul de Nooijer | 1978 | 4 min. 30 sec. | 16mm | colour | mono optical | no
dialogue
The party is non-stop at the De Nooijer family home. Innocent entertainment or a political cinema?
Living
Frans Zwartjes | 1971 | 15 min. | 16mm | colour | mono optical | no dialogue
Zwartjes\' masterpiece and his own favourite film. “Living has an uneasy, indefinable atmosphere. The camera’s strange swaying and the music that keeps going on and on…”Living demonstrates Zwartjes’ cinematographic mastery. He is the film’s main character and also does the camera work, pointing it at himself with his hand held outstretched. Zwartjes: “I was as strong as a bear back then.” The film is part of the ‘Home sweet home’ series, in which Zwartjes explored the house in The Hague he had just moved into. His wife and muse Trix plays the other role. The two characters move restlessly through the house. The film was made using an extremely wide angled lens (a 5.7), which makes the images very strange.
Review
Paul de Nooijer I1976 I 10 min I 16 mm | geen dialoog
Miraculous exhibition of the photographic work of the Nooijer. Photogrpahs are being examined, hung up and torn to pieces.
I Should See Paul de Nooijer | 1990 | 2min | 16 mm | geen dialoog
In I Should See, the narrator is comparing motion pictures and still life. He seems to prefer the former for as he is talking we see two men, one of whom is loading up his camera, the other is posing with a woman doing various things namely undressing her. As we see photos flashing we see the woman with her shirt off revealing her black bra. As the flashing photos continue we see the man fooling with the bra until the moment her breasts are to be fully revealed then the narrator says, \"Damn. No more pictures.\" as screen is now completely black. Damn indeed. Good in a kindly erotic way..

| Short films program Made in Rotterdam |
Poetic, Experimental and Progressive Short Films from Rotterdam
The short films in the program are a very personal selection of short films from the last five years, mainly produced in Rotterdam.
Tim Leyendekker : Opening Night
2009 / 5.26 min / 35 mm / no dialogue
And a voice said: \"Hope comes in many forms, but for tonight, you\'re on your own\"
Hanke Kleij and Andre Schreuders: De Wachter / The Watcher
2003, 25 min, dv, documentary
Poetic portrait of the Lage Erfbrug, a small bridge in Rotterdam. About the meaning of an insignificant spot. People pass by or wait. Excitement and silence. Fragmentation and unity. A film about waiting, watching and seeing. The world through the eyes of a bridge.
Andre Schreuders : Manifesto for a Free Fall
2009, 12 min, HD Cam, eng
Visual essay about our struggle with the two-headed monster boredom and mortal fear. Lots of people try to escape this by seeking exiting activities like bungee jumping. In the lonely mountains the alter ego of the film maker preaches to a single mountain goat about falling as the only real escape.
Michiel van Bakel: Inner Machine
2007 | 3.20 min. no dialogues
A visual poem, contemplations about the relative movements of time.
Die Trottos: Trottadam
2006 / 8\' 40min / no dialogue
Two women have a rendez-vous in Rotterdam, the city they chose for their wedding. Their personal approach towards the traditional ritual, undermines the established sterotypes. They evocate the atmosphere of the twenties, and simultaniously parody the topics of the hour. They enchant with their comical and lovely performance.
Eveline Ketterings: When We Are Big
2006 / 6.42min
In this controversial short subject, a very large man and a young girl are enjoying a beautiful day by a swimming pool. The two dive into the water, but their play takes on a sinister tone when the man submerges beneath the water, pulls the child down after him, and refuses to let her go. Running less than seven minutes, Als Wij Groot Zijn (aka When We Are Big) was greeted with open hostility by audiences at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, though director Eveline Kettering was quick to defend the meaning and intentions of her film, and several other filmmakers at the festival spoke out in her defense.
Manon Bovenkerk : Polka
duration: 1.15min, colour
\'Polka\' is a very short animation based on the frantic and surreal early 20\'s animations such as Felix the Cat.
Joost van Veen: Harrachov
2005, 10 min
An ingenious, sublime film installation bringing together a short film, film loops and a kinetic sculpture.
The ten minute long 35mm film explores the effect of an arcane force that, like a black hole or immensely powerful electromagnet, exerts a far-reaching &irresistible power upon certain objects and materials, willfully seducing, centralizing and internalizing them. Piece by piece, in the dark void of the cinema screen, an imaginary and menacing machine-system evolves.
Eveline Ketterings: The Burning Bride
2003, 5min
One intent shot documenting a mystifyingly random act of aspiration, or fitness. A bride, misplaced to some colorless Hong Kong bardo, flails and jumps like there\'s no past and no future. Persistence in time and the question: why? The question is always a motivation. Find the answer and there is another \"why?\". Why? There is always a new start with this question.
Manon Bovenkerk : Wil je me voeren aan de krokodillen
2009, 3.25min
Music video for the song \'Wil je me voeren aan de krokodillen\' (\'Will you feed me to the crocodiles\') by Goslink

| Filmmaker in focus: Martha Colburn |
Martha Colburn is a filmmaker currently living in Long Island City, New York. She is most well-known for her animation films, which are created through puppetry, collage, and paint on glass techniques. She has made over forty films since 1994. Recently in her career, Colburn has made sculptural/video installation work and experimented with integrating her films with musical performance. Yet music and film have always shared a deep connection within Colburn’s work.
Colburn’s style of collage fuses pop culture and political imagery with an aesthetic that is simultaneously fantastical, painterly, and punk rock. Many of her appropriated images are painted over with a diverse variety of paints which integrate them with the drawings and textures that are completely her own. Colburn makes her animations by facing the camera directly downward at the collaged panels below. She has always rejected the computer program as a means to create her animations. The “hands-on,” non-technological quality that defines her process keeps it at a personal and intimate level. Color is another very important aspect of Colburn’s films. Although her 2006 film Meet Me in Wichita deals with disconcerting subject matter, Colburn still chooses bright colors to define the film’s color scheme. It is these types of contradictions in Colburn’s work which deepen her visual and conceptual complexity.

Waschdrang Mama
2006 | 3:30 min
Male pinups get the Colburn treatment, an expressive and intensive work over to the dynamic music of Felix Kubin and Coolhaven. Sex and death are never far away, under the surface of the blushing bare chests and the celluloid. Released on K48\'s DVD insert in the publication K48006.
Cosmetic Emergency
2005 | 8 min
“Cosmetic Emergency” explores the idea of beauty through a collage of live action and lyrical animations. Afree-form take on the current trend of cosmetic obsession and the immortal quality of painting, the film searches for “what’s on the inside”. The music was commissioned for the film. Selected musicians, including New Zealand’s Hip-Hop artist, “Coco Solid” and “Half Japanese” founder Jad Fair, wrote and recorded humorously cynical songs about the cosmetic craze. Also included is a rare appearance by the Dutch Ambassador of Cosmetic Surgery, Marijke Helwegen.
Secrets of Mexuality
2003 | 5 min
A dense and highly detailed film exploring sexuality in the specific realms of Mexican wrestling and kitsch paintings through rapid-fire transformations.
Screened in International Film Festival Rotterdam.
Cat’s Amore
2002 | 2’30”
Hand-coloured animation revealing our animal instincts in a hot display of dancing catwomen and dogs, hungry for love. With a soundtrack of a French version of \"I Wanna Be Your Dog\" by Jacque Berrocal.
Skelehellavision
2001 / 8 min
This is film exploiting inventive techniques of animation in an attempt to realize the world that may await us after death. Using found pornography as part of the film and literally scratching skeletons over the footage frame-by-frame we see into a lust-filled Hell where the beauty of flesh is no more. Ass-licking bats, seething snakes, dancing lizards, and frightful females are a few of the stars in this movie exploring the over-heated depths of the afterlife. Winner of Best Animated Film, New York Underground Film Festival (2003).
The soundtrack, by Martha Colburn is a carnivalesque cut-and-paste of sounds and spooky movie sound track singing.
Evil of Dracula
1997 | 2 min
Attempt to realize the world that may await us after death. Using found pornography as part of the film and literally scratching skeletons over the footage frame-by-frame, we see into a lust-filled Hell where the beauty of flesh is no more. Ass-licking bats, seething snakes, dancing lizards, and frightful females in an animation exploring the over-heated depths of the afterlife.
Spiders In Love: An Arachnogasmic Musical
1999 | 5 min
Complex animated film of the world of the she-spiders. They dance and dash about with expressions of lust and hunger. Fabulous legs and complex dance routines. Indications of death and life abound.
What\'s On?
1997 | 1 min. 45 sec.
Hand colored-animated film is set to the chaos-poetry of New York poet “99 Hooker”. It is a hyper-speed rant on the evils and absurdities of American television. An over-the-top tumble with attacking baboons, a mutating Michael Jackson, game shows based on body parts and more.
Don\'t kill the weather man!
2007 | 5 min
Don’t Kill the Weatherman!, was inspired by the medieval manuscript, Three Pilgrimages, by Guillaume de Deguileville, one of the works in the Rosenbach’s collection. The three stories in the richly illustrated manuscript are (my translation), the Pilgrimage of Life, the Pilgrimage of the Soul, and the Pilgrimage of Jesus Christ.
Destiny Manifesto
2006 | 8 min 16mm transferred to Digi Beta
A paint-on-glass and collage animation, \'Destiny Manifesto\' fuses paintings of the American western frontier and contemporary images of the conflict in the Middle East into a work that explores the visual and psychological parallels between the representation of these two periods.
Meet Me In Wichita
2006 | 7 min 16mm transferred to Digi Beta
An indictment of America\'s dangerous foreign-policy naivety, this film is a play between fact, fiction, politics, fantasy, terror and morality. Using colorful cutout animation this film features Osama Bin Laden (as several characters from the Wizard of Oz) and Dorothy in a battle of dark forces and faces of Evil.
Wrong Time Capsule
2005 | 2:30 min Super 8mm
Singer Satomi Matsuzaki and the rest of Deerhoof are in danger of being literally consumed by dreams of fortune and the consumer culture. Using a cut-out collage style to show how money and games of chance are able to exert an enormous power and control over Deerhoof.
Myth Labs
2008 | 7:30 min 16mm (transferred to video).
‘Myth Labs’ interweaves Puritan visions, folk art, religious allegories and victims of the current Methamphetamine epidemic. This is a film about fear, paranoia, faith and loss of faith and salvation.

| The Ex in Beautiful Frenzy |
With an incredible amount of energy The Ex jump back and forth on stage maintaintaining intense concentration while still having fun. Emerging from the underground circuit where they began in 1979, The Ex is a small but steady star in the independent music community.
The film is about making music without paying attention to how things are supposed to sound. While the major labels are offering small independent bands huge amounts of money, The Ex consciously chose to stay away from the industry and do things their own way. For the members of The Ex punk is a way of living, simply refusing to participate in the grind. This quintet from Amsterdam runs its own label and books its own concerts in a steadfastly independent way.
The band has continually developed its musical skills, creating an ambling rhythm-dominated sound. Over the years The Ex has worked with some of the brightest lights of indie rock and avant-garde; Fugazi, Tortoise, Sonic Youth guitarists Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo, the late cellist and improviser Tom Cora, jazzdrummer Han Bennink and recording engineer / Shellac guitarist Steve Albini. The Ex has incorporated many new ideas and influences while retaining distinctively their own identity; reason enough for a documentary about the longest lasting independent band of the Netherlands.
Live The Ex are a force of nature, they play a whirling rock, driven by Katrins rolling syncopation and G.W Soks inspired half spoken-half sung vibrant vocals. Terrie and Andy, the two guitarists, spin and bounce off one another. Their entwined guitars cut with startling sharpness , enthusiastic interplay and constant improvisation. Luc and Katrin bump and clatter with bobbling bass lines and relentless rhythms. Its intense, irresistible, unstoppable.
With modest means, the Swedish directors have produced an exclusive and perceptive portrait of the band. Filmed on location over a two year period on tour in Europe and the U.S.A in squats, clubs and avant-garde jazz festivals, during rehearsals and at home with each member of the band. Interspersed with hilarious archive material and poetic sequences, the film gives a vivid and sparkling impression of this extraordinary band.

He is looking for musicians to play together these songs in the restaurant of an old friend. While strolling along the picturesque yards of the ruinous slums, we meet colourful Odesits who resemble the ancient heroes of the street songs we hear.
